1.The Idea
Most flashcard apps lock your decks inside a proprietary database or a cloud account. Get Good
Grades instead reads flashcard decks directly from user-controlled .yaml files on the
local file system — the content and the viewer are kept separate, so a deck is just a plain-text
file you can create, edit, organize, and share however you like, without depending on the app's own
storage.
2.The Build
I designed and built the application as an Electron desktop app with a React and TypeScript frontend. The core design decision was to keep flashcard content as YAML rather than in a database, so decks stay portable, human-readable, and shareable as plain text — no proprietary format, no account required.
3.Recognition
I presented Get Good Grades at .devHacks 2026, where it received the "Most Chaotic Evil Hack" award.
